Sahan Shakti: Shortlisted for Prestigious Grierson Awards
Sahan Shakti (2023), a film by JUST Impact Co-Founder, Chandni Brown, has been shortlisted for the biggest UK documentary film festival - The Grierson Awards 2024.
The Grierson Awards, more formally known as ‘Grierson: The British Documentary Awards’ is the largest documentary film festival in the UK, celebrating documentaries from Britain and abroad that have made a significant contribution to the genre.
The awards, in association with All3Media, are supported by key stakeholders in the television and film industry, including the BBC, Netflix, Channel 4 and Sky Documentaries, as well as the British Council.
Now, following a series of wins, ethnographic documentary ‘Sahan Shakti’ has been selected out of numerous entries as an official shortlist for the 2024 awards, adding to its recent successes at the IISFF and BigSyn International Film Festivals.
The ethnographic documentary encourages fresh dialogue and perspectives on transnational migration, following the life of Hina, a twice-Migrant to the UK as she navigates the different expectations placed upon her as a woman, wife and mother.
Director, Chandni Brown, comments:
“Sahan Shakti explores meanings of ‘home,’ ‘identity’ and ‘belonging,’ from an immigrant perspective. With a long history of colonial pasts and migration, the UK is now home to a thriving South Asian diaspora.
Drawing on the lived experience of this community was not only a deep-dive into my own identity, but a way to understand how traditional gender roles and expectations can shape the lives of second and third generation migrants.
Of course it would be amazing to make it to the final round of nominations, but even getting through to the Grierson shortlist is an absolute honour.”
